10 Questions to Ask Your Wedding DJ Before Booking

A good DJ does not just play music. They read the room, manage the energy, handle announcements, and keep your reception running smoothly from the first dance to the last song. A bad DJ? Well, we have all been to that wedding where the dance floor was empty by 9pm.

Before you hand over a deposit, ask these 10 questions. The answers will tell you everything you need to know about whether this DJ is the right fit for your wedding.

1. How many weddings have you DJ'd?

Weddings are not nightclubs. The skills required are completely different. You need someone who understands the flow of a wedding reception, knows when to bring the energy up and when to keep things mellow, and can handle the MC duties smoothly. Look for someone with at least 30-50 weddings under their belt.

2. Will you be the actual DJ on the day, or could it be someone else?

This is critical. Some DJ companies book you with their best DJ and then send a junior on the day. If you clicked with a specific person during the consultation, get it in writing that they will be the one at your wedding.

3. Can we see you in action?

Ask for video clips from recent weddings, or better yet, ask if you can attend part of an upcoming event they are working. Nothing beats seeing a DJ perform live to gauge their style and energy.

4. What equipment do you bring?

At minimum, you want professional-grade speakers suitable for your venue size, a backup laptop or music source, wireless microphones for speeches, and basic lighting. Ask whether they do a sound check before the event and whether they carry backup equipment in case something fails.

5. How do you handle music requests?

Some DJs are happy to take requests on the night. Others work strictly from a pre-approved playlist. Most good wedding DJs fall somewhere in between: they will take requests but reserve the right to say no to songs that will kill the vibe. Discuss this upfront so there are no surprises.

6. Can we give you a do-not-play list?

Just as important as your must-play songs. If you absolutely do not want the Macarena, Despacito, or that one song your ex loved, make sure your DJ respects that. A professional will happily work with a do-not-play list.

7. What happens if you get sick or have an emergency?

Life happens. A professional DJ will have a backup plan, either a partner who can step in or a network of trusted DJs they can call. If their answer is "that has never happened," push further. You want a real contingency plan, not optimism.

8. How do you manage the timeline?

The DJ often acts as the unofficial MC, announcing the first dance, cake cutting, bouquet toss, and speeches. Ask how they coordinate with your wedding planner or coordinator, and whether they are comfortable managing the reception timeline. A DJ who just plays music and waits to be told what to do next is not what you want.

9. What are your power and setup requirements?

This matters especially for outdoor venues or estates that might have limited power points. Your DJ should be able to tell you exactly what they need and whether they bring their own extension leads and power strips. Generator-dependent venues need a DJ who has worked in that environment before.

10. What is your cancellation and payment policy?

Get the business side sorted cleanly. Typical payment structures include a 50% deposit to secure the date and the balance due two weeks before the wedding. Ask about their cancellation policy, what happens if you need to change the date, and whether they have public liability insurance.

Bonus: Red Flags to Watch For

  • They cannot provide references or reviews from recent weddings
  • They do not offer a contract or written agreement
  • They are dismissive about your music preferences or want to "do their own thing"
  • They drink alcohol while working (yes, this happens more than you would think)
  • They have no backup equipment or contingency plan

Your DJ is one of the most important vendors at your wedding. Take the time to find the right one, and your dance floor will be packed all night.
